Orange is the new black
Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren Played By Uzo Aduba
Orange is the new black is a comedy crime drama which has won 20 awards and one golden globe award. This is a funny and unique series which follows the storyline of Piper Chapman, a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison after being convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting money for her drug-dealing girlfriend.
Crazy eyes is my example of a female character which doesn’t fit stereotypical characteristics of females in media. This comedic character is quite openly expressive with her feelings for main character Piper Chapman, which counteracts stereotypes of females being quite shy when it comes to love. The fact that Suzanne swears quite a lot and tends to get into numerous fights with inmates over small problems is more of a connotation towards male characteristics, contrasting strongly to the female stereotypes of being caring, gentle and dependant on a male figure. As the inmates refer to themselves as being ‘butch’ this means that they try to portray themselves as being quite aggressive and wish to be scary to other inmates which may be to stay safe as an act of survival in prison by having these quite manly characteristics. In this series we don’t see females being sexualised which goes against normal media stereotypes where females are quite sexualised in use of make-up and costume. The way in which they aren’t portrayed in this way adds to the realism of them being in prison.
Modern Family
Gloria Pritchett played by Sofia Vergara
Modern Family is a comedy drama which has won 93 awards and has also received a golden globe award. This is a witty comedy which is very popular following the lives of three different, but related families facing trials and tribulations in their own uniquely comedic ways. It grasps audiences as it seems 'real', as if it was a real family and therefore is enjoyable programme to watch as many viewers could relate to some of the situations which take place throughout the series.
Gloria is portrayed as the classic hormonal female who is very snappy and easy to get on the wrong side of, she also has a son. She is seen to do anything for her son which is a classic stereotypes for the motherhood qualities of females in media. Gloria is a very attractive character in the tv drama, which could link well to the 'male gaze'. She is given off to be quite self motivated but at the same time not that clever, classic of the dipsey personalities of females expressed in media.
